HR2 Heat Release Apparatus

The OSU heat release apparatus is in the process of being redeveloped by the FAA materials group. This project has been under way for more than a decade with the primary intention of replacing the OSU apparatus with a more precise and defined instrument for the estimation of heat release for aircraft certification.

Our technical director is an active member of the FAA International Aircraft Materials Fire Test Forum which oversees the development of FAA regulatory test methods for aircraft material certification. We have been part of the technical task group working on this since the beginning, over ten years ago. The new instrument is known as the HR2 (Heat release 2). We hope that the development will be finalised in 2026 with final inter laboratory trials due to be completed by the end of 2026 by the FAA. It will be officially released in the forthcoming FAA Materials Handbook Version 3.

The instrument is very similar to the OSU but with more defined requirements and build specification. Some elements are simplified but others are more complex. The data logging and calibration procedures are much more detailed and controlled. The HR2 test results have emerged as slightly harsher, when compared to those of the OSU, so the FAA are considering this as part of the project.

Assuming good progress with their schedule at the FAA, we will start development autumn 2026 with a view to supply the new HR2 early 2027. It will be made to order initially, until it enters official certification, and it becomes a regulated test method.

Our position regarding the development of the new apparatus was to wait until significant changes to the specification were confirmed and proven before fully designing and manufacturing the apparatus for production. We have scheduled this project start date in the third quarter 2026, with deliveries starting first quarter 2027.
